To stay at the top of any sport, a huge range of skills are needed. However, there is no physical ability that is as important as mental strength and persistence. The best athletes in the world know how to motivate themselves to keep going even in the most difficult circumstances.
Find the Motivation From Within
External factors can motivate you for a while. However, cheering crowds and the pleasure of the game will only last for so long. Jordan Cameron is a former NFL player who confirmed that a lot of players don’t love the sport that they play. He pointed out that everyone has to find their own, personal reasons to keep going when they are tired or injured.
At 35, Cristiano Ronaldo is still playing soccer and setting records at the highest level. He has stated in the past that “I set my own goals. I strive to better myself and I always want to win.” This is the sort of attitude that allows an athlete to reach a high standard and to stay there for a long time.
Some people might start a sport as a way of making money or becoming famous. However, there comes a time when this isn’t enough anymore. Everyone needs to have their own secret motivation deep inside that helps them to get up and do it all over again every day.
You might find that it helps to have a hero to look up to, or to train with someone who has the same goals as you. Another option is to write a note of your main reason for wanting to succeed and then keep it close to you all the time.
