The ‘federal’ is a pretty strong name. Removing the vowels makes it cool and edgy. So what you’re left with after that is a very apt name indeed for a set of kitchen knives, which is precisely what Ian Murchison and Rohan Thakar – the duo behind FDRL – have done. Based in Ottawa the design company have recently unveiled their newest range – the Maple Set knives, which although may sound like the name of a band is actually a set of knives made from maple wood…unsurprisingly. The tag-team partnership of Murchison and Thakar decided that maple wood would allow the set to blend in naturally with their surroundings, while the sliver of metal for the blade gives it a sharp finish (yeah, I went there). The knives may look light, but looks can be deceptive because the balanced weight of these knives allows them to be used by any level of chef. On top of that, the wood has been sealed and is food-safe, which leads to an easy cleanup after the prep is complete and the hunger has been sated. These knives are a must buy when getting a new kitchen from Unique Fabrications.”
