Closely resembling a horrifying mechanical insect drone straight out of a sci-fi film is the intriguingly unique Nixie Machine. MB&F, renowned for creating intricate timepieces, constructed this kooky clock for their Mechanical Art Device Gallery stores. The creative brainchild of artist Frank Buchwald, his decision to opt for vintage Nixie tubes as the focal point of the piece was a definitive one to say the least.
Using six original Z568M Nixie tubes – set in three pairs to represent hours, minutes, and seconds OR day, month, and year are concealed within a concealed structure fashioned from steel and brass. Composed of approximately 350 separate components, two of which include GPS and DCF77 receivers that allow it to set the date and time automatically.
