I know what you’re thinking: another girl-comes-of-age-by-doing-something-ridiculous flick. And that it stars the Queen of Nice Reese Witherspoon gets your eyes rolling even more. But what if I said this?
Boobs.
Yes, Reese bares them–a couple of times–in “Wild,” her latest movie. But take my word for it, guys: you might come for the mams, but you’ll stay for this really terrific, yes, girl-comes-of-age-by-doing-something-ridiculous flick.
In this movie, based on the real-life memoir, Cheryl Strayed (Witherspoon) hikes the 1,100-mile Pacific Crest Trail, looking for answers to questions she doesn’t even know to ask. While doing so, she reflects upon a series of tragedies that sent her spiraling into a self-destructive depression and finds herself out in the wilderness, by herself.
It’s a touching look inside the psyche of a woman who has been crushed by circumstances, had her world turned upside down, and didn’t quite figure out her to right the ship. There are subplots, flashbacks, and harrowing adventures all occurring at the same time. The fun starts early on, when she gets to her first stopping point, only to pull out her cooking torch…only to bring the wrong type of fuel.
So watch with your girl, let your inner 12-year-old snicker and your grown self lust–and yes, they still look pretty spectacular, by the way. But don’t be too macho to admit you enjoyed “Wild.” Because you will.
